Natural Dog Training DVD Q&A #1
A recent reader had some questions related to the Natural Dog Training DVDs, so I thought that I'd post them (and the answers) here for your benefit. Natural Dog Training DVD Q&A begins...now! How intense should the push from the dog be before starting the...
More information about introducing two dogs
Among the most popular articles on this site is the one I wrote about the best way to introduce two dogs to each other (in ten easy steps!) using Natural Dog Training techniques. One recent reader asked a question in the comments, and I thought I'd answer it here for everyone's benefit. This is also a chance for long-time readers (as will be most of these "questions answered" segments) to see how far you've come in your understanding of dogs via Natural Dog Training. Magie writes:
An A-Ha! Moment Using the Natural Dog Training DVDs (with pictures)
When I started the Natural Dog Training blog, there was hardly any information on-line about how to use Natural Dog Training with your dog. So starting this blog was a bit of an experiment for me - would you even be interested? How effective could a "blog" be at...
What To Do When YOUR Dog Is Aggressive in Four Steps
Unless you're some kind of sick dude/dudette, there's nothing quite as bad as seeing YOUR dog get aggressive with another dog/person/creature. Once the flurry of emotion settles down, you're left with a simple question: What do I do with my aggressive dog? Given the number of e-mails that I receive about this one topic (there are MANY), I thought that I'd write the definitive answer here.
Neil Sattin Interviewed by Brenda Bryan of Barking Buddha Doga
Most of you have heard me talk again and again about how Natural Dog Training has two main components. We work with dogs at higher and higher levels of energy, learning how to ATTRACT them as they become more energized. That's what "being the moose" is all about. The other key component that we've discussed is relaxation - both for human and dog. Since we are physical conduits for the emotional energy of the environment, it follows that the more relaxed our dogs are (and the more relaxed we are) - the more energy that we can experience without going into overload behavior. Enter Brenda Bryan, of Barking Buddha Doga.
Dog Training: Where's the Danger? An advanced exercise
A week or so ago, we talked about another major question that you can answer for your dog: Where is the Danger? In this article I'm going to give you a more advanced exercise in defining "the danger" for your dog. Please make sure that you've read the first article...
Dog Training: Where's the Danger? Another important question to answer
A dog's life revolves around two principle questions. The first one is "What do I do with my energy?" and it's what we've principally been talking about for these many months on the NaturalDogBlog. The second question, a bit more elusive, is "Where is the danger?"...
Friday quick links and Continuing the Discussion
In case you missed the article on the subject of "Negative Reinforcement in Natural Dog Training" - please head over to check out the article and ensuing conversation. I'm fond of the new terminology suggested by our reader Angelique "Energizer" and "Refocuser" -...
Does Your Dog Always Have to Walk Next to You?
In this post, I answer the reader question: Does your dog always have to walk next to you or behind you? In brief, the answer is "No". Read more to see why.
Dog Training: Easing Separation Anxiety for Your Dog
Along with doggie aggression, one of the most common issues that people have with their dogs is behavior that we would translate as "separation anxiety". You leave the house, and your dog goes on a rampage - digging, chewing, barking, howling, etc. - much to your...
Dog Training: Some potential resolutions for a new year coming
Hello everyone. Well it didn't quite start out as a "vacation" - but it's kinda looking that way right now! After my last post (on creating an eBook) I've been giving some time to planning for the Natural Dog Training Blog eBook, and I think I'm going to continue...
Dog Training: Part Three of Teaching Your Dog to Sit, Lie Down, and Stay - The Stay
A year or so ago, I was walking my dog through our in-town neighborhood, when out of nowhere a LARGE shepherd mix came bounding towards us (without a leash) with trouble on her mind. Having worked so frequently with aggressive dogs I could see that for whatever...
Dog Training: Crate Training Your Dog
While crate training isn't a "natural dog training" technique, per se, it is a technique that I often recommend to clients, so I wanted to spend a few moments discussing it here on the blog. Using a crate is handy for helping you and your dog with housebreaking,...
Dog Training: Part Two of Teaching Your Dog to Sit, Lie Down, and Stay - the Lie Down Part
In the first part of this natural dog training lesson, we learned how to get your dog into a high state of drive and then, using a small platform to define their space, elicit a "sit" using your dog's natural response to your body language. You are teaching your dog...
