Neil Sattin Interviewed By Dog Obedience Training Online
Recently I was approached by Tobias Lansley of Dog Obedience Training Online for an interview. It's always interesting to talk to people who have no preconceived notion of what Natural Dog Training is, or how I train - particularly because the questions can take us...
Listen to the Conference Call with Kevin Behan and Neil Sattin
As a follow-up to the interview that I did with Kevin Behan at the beginning of the month, we conducted a live Q&A conference call a couple weeks later. We had some great questions from callers all over the country, and I thought you would appreciate being able...
Neil Sattin Interviews Kevin Behan
Last night Kevin Behan and I were hanging out (so to speak - we were on the phone), and we recorded an interview for your listening pleasure. For those of you new to the Naturaldogblog, Kevin is the creator of "Natural Dog Training", and was the person who helped me...
Get Your Dog to Come When Called No Matter What
When it comes to our dogs, probably the most important thing that anyone wants is to know that their dog will come when called no matter what distractions there are in the environment. It can be a matter of simple convenience - like calling your dog to come when...
Discussion about Natural Dog Training on Dogwise
I like to keep an eye out for when discussions about the Naturaldogblog occur on other sites. Usually when this happens I'll see that there are a bunch of visitors from a particular forum, and so I'll go visit the forum to see what they're talking about. I'm mostly...
Start Your Day by Walking with Your Dog
How do you start your day? Do you take a moment to plan, to center yourself? Or do you just dive in to the chaos of your to-do list and your daily musts? Perhaps you think that the "planning" option sounds nice on paper (and would look nice on paper) - but you just never seem to get around to that crucial step of creating a vision for your day before you get carried away in the current. Well there's an easy way to get centered any morning, and it has benefits to your physical well-being as well as your mental clarity. Take a walk with your dog.
Dog Training: Outdoors is for Action, Indoors is for Relaxation
This article is going to address the question of how to think about indoor activity and outdoor activity with your dog - once and for all. There have been many questions about this aspect of Natural Dog Training - both here and in the forum - so I thought that it...
Change yourself to change your dog
The key to changing your dog's behavior is changing your own behavior. Your success in developing the kind of relationship that you want with your dog, or changing your dog's habits, is directly proportional to your ability to change your own habits. In other words, if you want different results than what you're currently experiencing with your dog, then you are going to have to start acting differently yourself. And habits are tough to break.
How do you deal with a hyper dog who digs at houseplants and snaps at you
How do you deal with an exuberant dog? What do you do when you catch your dog "in the act"? When is it appropriate to "discipline" your dog? A reader writes with some great questions - and I follow up with my answers:
Improvisation in Dog Training and Life in General
One of our basic human needs is stability. Sure we learn, and we grow - that's happening all the time. And it's good to take some time to process new knowledge and skill, to feel like you really OWN the material. But it can be all too easy to hang out in your comfort zone for too long. When you're training your dogs (or training yourself, for that matter), you have to honor another paradoxical need: Variety.
Neil Sattin Interview with the Sarasota Dog
Sarasota Dog has released an interview that I did with Mary Lou Davidson a week or so ago, where we talk about how Natural Dog Training works and what makes it so great. You can listen to it by following this link: Neil Sattin interview with Sarasota dog
Neil Sattin and Natural Dog Training featured in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette
My instructional DVD set, Natural Dog Training: The Fundamentals, was just reviewed in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. What I like about this review is that the author, Rhonda Owen, allowed herself to be skeptical - but then went on to actually talk about the merits and specifics of the DVDs. There's also a great cartoon - although I would have preferred a moose instead of a chicken! Check out this .pdf version of the article to see what I'm talking about.
"Be The Moose" Is a More Compelling Metaphor
In other words, if you can wrap your brain around "the moose" being the one in control, if you can wrap your brain around obedience behaviors being hunting behaviors in a different context, if you can wrap your brain around dogs needing an object of attraction (the moose) to vent the energy that they experience in the world - then you will get results.
Dog Training and Mindfulness - an Essay in The Messenger
The way that you train your dog is simply a component of a well-balanced life. It's a subject that I've touched on occasionally here on the Naturaldogblog, although I've been pretty focused on giving you some practical techniques to use with your dog. Ultimately, however, your success with your dog is bound inextricably with your "self-success" - how well you are able to get into the moment with your dog, and be present for whatever is happening then and there.
Missed last week's interviews with Neil Sattin? Watch and Listen here
Many thanks to all of you who went out of your way (and woke up bright and early in the morning) to watch/listen to me last week during my week of bringing Natural Dog Training to Atlanta (and beyond). In case you missed it, here are two links - one to an mp3 podcast of my appearance on FamilyNet TV (hopefully will get video at some point soon), and another link to the video of my spot on Atlanta's CBS morning show with Jennifer Valdez. Enjoy!
